The Kentucky Derby is run annually in Louisville, KY, on the first Saturday in May of each year. This one and a quarter mile race at the famed Churchill Downs is known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports." It has also been called "The Run for the Roses" appropriately named for the blanket of roses draped over the winner.
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is followed by the Preakness Stakes then the Belmont Stakes in the ensuing months. To claim the title of the Triple Crown, the horse must win all three races, a feat that has only occurred 11 times in history and not once since 1978. The attendance at the Kentucky Derby ranks first in North America and usually surpasses the attendance of all other stakes races.
